In Jesus’ day the primary support for a woman was the men in her life. Mary, Jesus’ mother, is now vulnerable as she is a widow and now must rely on her son for her wellbeing. A reminder that often the real need for compassion is for the person left behind and left alone. We may grieve the loss of someone, but our compassion is needed by the person who experienced the loss and the resulting void it left in their life. Scripture tells us that Mary had other children, but Jesus makes sure she has John to care for her. You can and do choose family and community.
Jesus replied, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” He stretched out his hand toward his disciples said, “Look, here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father who is in heaven is my brother, sister, and mother. (Matthew 12:49-50)
Family is not always what you are born into but can be the incredible people you surround your life with.
Thoughts to ponder:
When you are looking for a church to become a member, what is it you look for when you visit? On what basis do you make your choice of a church community?
What is important to you in making your choices for your most intimate, familial relationships?
Does the community we choose impact the grace we find and experience?
Are there times the church provided you with the grace you needed to move toward that hopeful future?
Are there times the church did not meet the need? What was missing?
